Snk Arcade Classics Vol. 1

Getting our SNK nostalgia on... again.

This may be the first official collection of SNK’s “greatest hits” games on one disc but it certainly isn’t the first time we’ve seen these games outside of a Neo-Geo cartridge and there lies the only real problem with this collection.

For $29.99, you get sixteen games including Fatal Fury, King of Fighters ’94, Samurai Showdown, Metal Slug, and King of the Monsters. There truly are some choice games on here but the problem is that most of these games have a complete collection of their own or have been repackaged before in some form be it mobile, XBLA, or Virtual Console. Hey, at least the price of this collection beats out the Virtual Console’s prices and won’t take that much space on your precious hard drive space.

King of the Monsters terrorizes your nostalgia!

Aside from that little compliant, the rest of this package is on the level with me. The games are nicely emulated in their original heavy and colorful pixel forms. If you bought the collection for the Wii, you have a number of controller options that mysteriously are missing the Gamecube controller, but do allow you to use the Classic controller, Wii Remote plus Nunchuck, or just plain Wii remote. Of course, the most comfortable option is the Classic Controller especially for the fighting games and I can only imagine how proper an arcade stick would have felt.

For the achievement addict, the game does include “medals” for accomplishing certain goals while playing the different games, for instance there’s a medal in Metal Slug if you complete the first stick without using your gun. Unfortunately, you will have to acquire some of these medals to unlock a few games such as World Heroes. Unlocking ten medals to play World Heroes? Sure it’s easy enough, but after paying $29.99 plus tax, please don’t make me jump through hoops to play games listed on the back of the box. Medals also unlock various art and media stuff which is appropriate, but not games.

Highs
A lot of great games for a cheap price; doesn't take up a lot of Wii space.

Lows
Games are already available in many other forms; having to unlock games you already paid for is kind of a bummer.

Final Verdict
So here we have a sixteen game collection for thirty bucks, that won’t take up a lot of space on your Wii, packs in some good games, and whose only problems are various other locations to play these games and a bit of hoop jumping for some of them. Of course you are going to do what you want with your money, but if you’ve been eyeing it for a dose of nostalgia or maybe just want to introduce someone to the world of SNK, this isn’t a bad collection to own!
