What could have been a fatal flaw was deftly maneuvered around by developer Grasshopper Manufacture, who ensured that timing was everything. Nothing is ever really too long or too tedious. Even the comedic grass-mowing mission is set at a three minute timer, which is just about the time it gets boring. Yet everything falls under this category, a revolutionary thing for any developer to have. There is literally nothing that can lead to boredom in this game. Everything has its place and purpose, and only the gamer can ruin it.
Finishing moves don't only work on the one enemy you've been beating up, but all his surrounding friends too.
There are a few annoyances in NMH, such as the need to recharge health several times before a boss fight. While it's commendable that free health sits before every major battle, as well as a save point, going in an out of the save to use constantlyrespawning health is unfortunate. Thankfully, the rest fall under the same category, just as minor annoyances.
No More Heroes is an amazing game, one that makes great use of all the parts to make the greater whole. A comical, twisted story; memorable characters; a horrid mixture of potty humor, one-liners and sarcasm; retro and modern audio...nothing is missing. Whether it's taking down the next objective on your list or saving the game from the comfort of your toilet, there is no doubt that No More Heroes, while not revolutionary in any way, pushes everything to the extreme and succeeds.
Highs
Excellent use of graphics and sound, wonderful retro feel, great controls.
Lows
Some mediocre camera work, occasional blocky images, minor frame-rate drops.
Final Verdict
A great adult-oriented game for the Wii that takes the genre the farthest it can go on the console.
