Godzilla: Unleashed

Did I also mention Godzilla: Unleashed contains some of the most awkward Wii controls on the console yet? Just about every move requires you to perform a different combination of button pressing and Wiimote waving. That'd be just fine if only you didn't have to spend most of your time flailing your hands around like a moron while your monster either performs a completely different action than you want it to or fails to respond at all. The unresponsiveness of the controls also entails having trouble making your monster change direction as well as the utter randomness of using your monster's breath attacks. The only control feature that actually works in this game is the unique breath attack duel that occurs when two monsters launch their long-range attacks at eachother, triggering a Pong-like minigame involving bouncing a pulse back and forth and the loser eating laser.

Wonder if the Japanese army has a giant fly swatter?

Looking on the bright side of things, Godzilla: Unleashed is a graphically-satisfying game. The beautifully-rendered breath attacks combined with the constant barrage of firepower from planes, tanks and UFOs makes for a pretty tight monster war scene. Unfortunately the same praise can't be saved for the game's audio which, besides containing the fore-mentioned awful voice-acting, has some of the worst butt rock since the Dynatsy Warriors series playing in the background. Even the monster cries sound muffled. Godzilla himself sounds like he has a soar throat.

At its best, Godzilla: Unleashed is a mildly-entertaining button masher that's ideal for playing with a bunch of rowdy buddies and doesn't look half-bad. At its worst, it's a repetitive exercise in mediocrity complete with a broken control system and a crappy story mode. If Atari is still around this time next year, let's hope they can "unleash" a better Godzilla game that addresses these issues.

Highs
Contains almost every monster from the 54 year-old Godzilla series, including new ones created exclusively for this game; sharp, colorful visuals; some fun to be had in multiplayer.

Lows
Lame, pointless story mode; broken control system; poor audio and voiceacting.

Final Verdict
It may retain a few redeeming qualities, but all in all Godzilla: Unleashed is a step backward for Pipeworks' Godzilla series.
