Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure

Why is it obvious? Because it’s a rated E game on the Wii that is supposed to be fun for adults as well as kids, and it isn’t a big brand name like Mario or Metroid. In any case, this is how it plays: using the pointer, command Zack to interact with the environment using the just Wii remote, meaning no nunchuk, and its motion sensors. The only buttons you have to press the whole game is the A button to make commands and the power button to...well, you know. What is new is that the characters aren’t so much being controlled as they are being told what to do. There is no emotional attachment to be made, but what it lacks in emotional value it makes up in intellect.

Peril and danger are at every corner for a pirate. Never forget who's where in the food chain.

Examples of things done in the game would be using wiki as a bell by shaking the Wii-mote, clicking on a tree and pushing the Wii-mote forward and back to shake items loose from it, and using a saw to cut down trees or would. This interactivity isn’t great by any means, though it is novel and does add to the experience for those easily entertained by technology.

While this may sound very simple, and it really is, the game belies its controls. Z&W is a thought provoking game, requiring Sherlock Holmes-like skills to solve riddles that at first seem unanswerable, and then make perfect sense when complete. This is a serious puzzle game that will demand time, patience, and most importantly intelligence. The faint of mind will undoubtedly use up more time and will require much greater patience if they wish to make it through the whole game.

Parts like this tend to take awhile to figure out. Grab some lunch, some paper and a few rocket scientists.

For most normal people the game will seem short the second you finish it, though clocking how long it took will prove that plenty of time was spent. Each level takes between half an hour to two hours, depending on how dedicated you are and how strong your will is. Keeping oneself from looking for walkthrough’s online is a heavy burden these days, and anyone who has that strength will be happy they passed up that opportunity. With 24 levels, a good 15-20 hours of gameplay seems short, but stretch the time for the one or two levels you spent a good few days figuring out and it all adds up.

The name may be unbelievingly dull, awful, and causing aneurisms among marketing people everywhere, but Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros’ Treasure is a great game that the kids might feel a bit overwhelmed by, though on the other hand they may find it easier than some of our older, stubborn minds do. With the complete lack of marketing and hype for the title, it’s practically the duty of all reviewers to say please, don’t miss out on this game. It isn’t for everyone, but it’s cheaper than most games and plays excellently.

Highs
Simple controls, great graphics, excellent puzzles and fun gameplay.

Lows
Awful name, not for all users, overly difficult at times.

Final Verdict
A great title that deserves your time and patience, so long as you have the intellect to match.
