While killing goombas has always been a simple matter of stomping on their head, Super Mario Galaxy gives you a couple of options for dispatching your foes that will no doubt come into greater use for some of the tougher enemies in the game. By quickly moving the remote left and right, you can make Mario perform a nifty spin attack that will stun any enemies that are struck by it. Once stunned, you can finish them off by simply walking into them which will cause Mario to automatically punt them into oblivion. You can also aim with the remote and hold B to fire any gems that you have collected along the way.

After two planets worth of goomba stomping, I found my way to a hole in the ground that led me to my prize, a shiny and beautiful star. In order to get it however, I needed to light up panels that were spread out across the room. The trick to this was that the panels were covered by moving blocks with electrical currents at the end that would quickly fry Mario to a crisp should he get too close to them. Fortunately, since this was a beginner’s level, lighting up all of the panels was a cinch and the Star was soon mine.

The second galaxy that I visited focused a lot less on combat and a lot more on space age platforming. One of the most prominent features of this galaxy was the little blue stars that would pull Mario to them when you clicked them with your remote. Exploration was a big factor in this galaxy as the main objective in it was to collect five silver stars, which would then combine to create a golden star. The trick is that all of the stars lie in empty space and can only be found by walking on to platforms that only appear when you come within about two steps of the edge of the platform that you are currently on. Move too fast or too carelessly and you’ll end up dying a tragic death as you wander in the vast emptiness of space.
