Rockin' Out

As discussed earlier, RB has four modes of play while GH3 only has one: playing guitar. No, you can’t even play the bass without a friend to play co-op or versus. All you can do is play guitar.

Not to fear, because guitar playing is done excellently. Note playing isn’t as strict as it was with GH2, giving a bit of leeway towards timing that was well needed for the series. It’s not like real guitarists are so perfect at live showings, so why do we have to be? That’s not to say it’s too lenient, because timing is still an important factor, but it doesn’t require such perfect timing that the actual artist playing a real guitar couldn’t match it perfectly.

Hammer-ons and pull-offs perform much better as well, not being nearly impossible to do this time around. On easy and medium difficulties, doing a hammer-on or pull-off is rare because the notes go too slowly, but on hard and expert some songs have more of those notes than standard ones.

General gameplay is fun, but at times way too difficult. Easy and medium are good for first-time Guitar Hero players, but some songs on hard are ridiculously difficult. Even after beating the majority of the game on expert, these few songs still elude victory for me and many others. RB is nearly the opposite (with the guitar), where beating the game on expert is not that hard at all in comparison. Singing follows suit, but drums are more than enough of a burden for those interested. But the difficulty, once again, is what divides the heroes from the zeroes.

And if you want to tune up with a friend, there’s co-op mode which has six songs playable only for multiplayer, and co-op has its own campaign. The bummer is that it’s only on a local console, so no online co-op. Battling online is the best there is, and once again there’s an awesome improvement to the series. Face offs don’t just let you play the song and see who does better, it’s a serious head to head match. Instead of star power, you can pick up different attacks that can devastate your opponent, but they can do the same to you. It certainly adds dimension to the multiplayer.

Rock Band takes gameplay to the extreme with four players playing in total harmony, or missing the boat completely.

Instead of doing the ol’ boring eight-set tour of Guitar Hero, RB has a world tour with different gigs at different, real life locations. It isn’t just some generic stage, but different places, different maps, and honest to goodness different settings. It may not sound like much, especially since most of the time you’re looking at the notes to play, not the background, but it really does make a difference. Seeing good looking textures, even as a background is stimulating. GH3 doesn't even compare to how good RB looks visually. It isn’t just a fluid drummer, instead of GH3's robotic one, but a great looking performance, fans that don’t just do the same thing at every show and what really looks like an honest-to-goodness effort.

GH3 honestly looks about the same as GH2 graphically. Sure, the characters are better looking, but they just have that “meh” factor, where they aren’t anything special. Perhaps it’s customization that RB offers that makes us biased, but you would think that musicians like Brett Michaels, Tom Morello and Slash would look amazingly good. But they don’t.

No, it doesn't look bad...but if you keep a close eye on the fret bar, you'll never worry about visuals!

Customization ends with what guitars you want and what clothes characters wear. Not so for RB. Practically everything is customizable, from the instruments to clothes to tattoos to hair styles. Making a unique musician is no burden at all, though the load times are depressing. Not just for customizing group members, but for everything. GH3 loads like a charm, and finishes loading a song before you can read the waiting screen note. RB lets you read it a few times before starting up.

Winner: Toss up! Rock Band has many more options, better visuals and different types of play, but is also too easy at times. Guitar Hero 3 lacks all of these, but is harder and will make you work for your wins, making it a favorite among hardcore rockers. If you’re part of the band, RB is your ticket. If you just want to smoke the competition, GH3 is your best bet.
